Population Flows: Immigration Impacts

In the 63 years since the introduction of planned migration to Australia the 2007/8 proved to be one of the busiest. Almost 100,000 new skilled migrants settled as permanent residents in 2007/8 with the largest numbers coming from the UK, India, PRC and the Philippines.  In his introduction to the report available on tne deaprtment's website Senator Evans, Minister for Immigration and Citizenship continued to be positive about the future.

"Today, with migrants accounting for almost 60 per cent of our nation’s population growth, we can be assured that immigration will continue to play a major role in shaping our society for many years to come."
